Second to only your living room, your dining room is the heart of your home. Time spent enjoying this space is divided between hostess duties for friend and family gatherings, trying to get your children to eat all of their vegetables and using each meal as an excuse to spend some quality time with your loved ones. So why not show it a little love this season and freshen up the space with these few simple transformation ideas.
Update your tablescape
Setting the dinner table each night in preparation for a meal can get a little repetitive, especially if you have had the same dinnerware since leaving home, or have had to put up with some hand me down tableware from your grandmothers, son’s wife. Investing in some quality dinnerware with a beautiful pattern or a bit of texture can make your dinner time experience just that little bit extra special.
Unique and handmade ceramic dinnerware has also made a comeback this year. Impress your guests by allowing them to enjoy their meals on ‘one of a kind’ handmade ceramics, that add a homely and inviting feel to the space.
If you’re working with a strict budget, or have a partner that doesn’t see the sense in updating a space that there isn’t anything wrong with, just updating your table cloth or placemats with a funky new pattern or a different colour can be quite effective.
Alternatively, try changing your silver cutlery for gold… you will be surprised at the difference it makes!
Add a statement piece
In any dining space, your dining table is usually the main focal point of the room, however, it doesn’t need to be the first thing that is noticed upon entering the room.
Create interest within the space with a centrepiece of a cluster of three homeware pieces. Inject depth and interest by using homewares of different sizes, colours and textures. If the size of your dining table is an issue just add one statement piece in the centre of your table that ties in with the style and colour scheme of the rest of the space and home… and make it pop!
Switch up the Artwork
If you have had the same piece of artwork hanging in the dining room space since your initial move in… it might be time for a change. Try changing the artwork with another piece that you may already own… if that doesn’t work, there are plenty of affordable but stunning artwork options available out there.
If you would prefer a bigger change and something different altogether, try hanging a mirror as opposed to a piece of art. This will give your space dimension and depth as well as give the room the fresh new look that you have been searching for.
Don’t neglect the ceiling
An easy tip for updating any space is, “Do not neglect the ceiling.” This can literally be used as a fifth wall… the options are endless!
At a feature wallpaper to the ceiling that will immediately draw the eyes up and create more space as well as both interest and depth. (Your brave design choice will be the main discussion of your dinner parties and will be discussed in depth and remembered among any guests you introduce to the space.)
Installing a new lighting feature is also an easy transformation option, and an inexpensive one at that! Installing either a cluster of pendants to hang centrally over your dining table or one main feature pendant or chandelier can transform a room all by itself!
Add a bar cart to your dining room
If your space permits, adding a bar cart to the dining room can give it a fresh new look and add a little bit of luxury.
If you have a console table, side table or buffet that’s just taking up space in another area of your home, you may be able to use that in replacement of a bar cart to store all of your entertainment beverages.
With a nice tray and the correct styling, you can transform any one of the suggested furniture items from a hidden piece to a stylish dining room addition.
Create a zone in your dining room by adding a rug
If you’ve been looking for a place to put a floor rug that previously belonged to another space in your home, don’t overlook the opportunity to roll it out under your dining table. Not only with this create a welcoming softness underfoot, it will inject colour and depth into the space and will completely refresh the look and feel of the space.
Keep in mind that some of your most cherished memories will be made while enjoying meals with your family and friends… So why not give one of your favourite, and most used spaces in your home a little love.
