The BEDROOM with The Beach Furniture

The inner sanctum. The place of dreams, tranquillity & rejuvenation. Converts into a movie cinema at night, a makeup studio by morning and an outfit runway on weekends.

Considering a third of our life is spent in the bedroom it makes sense that we spend some time creating the perfect sanctuary. That place that we yearn for most at the end of a long day. And although we don’t sell beds here at The Beach Furniture, we still know a thing or two about styling a bedroom. So we have gathered The Beach Furniture team together to divulge the answers to a clutter free, beautifully presented bedroom fit for a King, Queen or both!

When we think bedroom we think a place of CALM, a place to UNWIND and RESET. The mind should be no different. Give it the time it deserves.

Morning Rituals

Before we jump right into how to style your bedroom we thought it best to first give some tips on how to get the most out of your bedroom from a more health and wellbeing point of view. You know, the “zen” stuff!

– Begin mornings and end days internally. Checking in with yourself. This can be done through the form of Meditation.

– Deep breathing. First thing in the morning, rather than grabbing for the phone to check Facebook or emails try going internally before the stresses of the day get their chance to take hold.

– Practice gratefulness. What are you grateful for each day? Try and list at least 3 each day.

– Leave the stress at the door at the end of a long day.

Style and feel

As we all know the bedrooms’ main purpose is sleep. So this should be our primary metric when planning the style and feel of the room. The colours and tones you choose for your walls, artwork, bedding and so on will have a large influence on how the room feels. Neutral tones along with calming pastel colours such as green, blue and pink can help turn off the chattering mind at the end of a long day.

The overall style of the house should flow into the bedroom. Try and keep the style consistent and have similar elements throughout each room of the house.

The Bed

The bed is undoubtedly the focal point of the bedroom, without it the room would have no need to exist.

When figuring out the positioning of the bed it is also important to consider that the room also needs to be functional. This means allowing enough space to go about your daily routines without connecting shin bones with bedframes! Ouch!

We have all heard of “Feng Shui” and will often throw the term around wildly in discussion but many of us have absolutely no idea what it actually means.

Feng Shui is a Chinese thought defined as; a system of laws considered to govern spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to the flow of energy (chi), and whose favourable or unfavourable effects are taken into account when siting and designing buildings.

It is important to consider Feng Shui when planning all rooms in your house and considering the flow of energy throughout the house.

There is an extensive list of things to consider when facilitating “chi” to your bedroom, so we have cherry picked some of the important ones for you.

– Make sure the bed is positioned as far away from the door as possible.

– Make sure the bed is a good height and allows for energies to flow under the bed.

– Have a solid wall behind your bed.

– Have balanced energies on either side of the bed. Two bedsides will create symmetry and balance.

– Keep your bed away from the tv, desks and other distractions.

– Avoid negative energy such as mirrors.

– Keep books elsewhere. A few are okay but large amounts can create an overwhelming feeling.

Include earth-toned colours for nourishment and stability.

– Have soft lighting and natural light.

The Linen

In our view the linen is the icing on the cake. It’s the stuff to get excited about! Nothing beats knowing there is fresh linen on your bed before a good night’s rest. Make sure the linen matches the textures and colours of the room to prevent any clashing and if in doubt layer neutral colours together and add small splashes of colour with pillows or throws.

Here are a couple of our favorites brands:

The Bedsides

It is important to have balance in your bedroom. This includes bedsides. Ideally having two evenly placed on either side of the bed and bonus points for having them consistent or identical in design. Try to keep them uncluttered and uncomplicated but if you do need to store lots of items then consider a bedside with a concealed drawer. We have a beautiful range of bedsides not to mention some favourites such as the Auxillary & Caribbean bedsides in-store.

Lighting & Lamps

Setting the mood is key for lighting the bedroom so avoid harsh lighting. It is also important to not overdo it with lights as this can be extremely overstimulating for our eyes prior to sleep. The last thing you want to do before a good nights sleep is dazzle yourself in bright lights or set your mind racing from artificial light such as technology screens. If you do need some task lighting for light reading then think table lamps, pendants or wall lights. Soft downlights can be great for creating a calm ambience and also for casting light onto feature art or furniture. Click here to see our current range.

Whats under the bed? No it’s not the boogie man but yes it can be an untamable beast none the less!

Is it a storage nightmare hiding under your bed? To keep your belongings in an orderly and neat fashion, check out our trunk range which are ideal for decluttering the bedroom whilst also looking great!

What are your feet landing on first thing in the morning? Carpet or hardwood floors? If it is the later, consider placing a light soft woven rug so your feet have something to sink into on a cold morning.

Chest of drawers

It is very important that you have the space for all your belongings but equally important that you don’t cramp your room with oversize furniture. You want them to compliment the room but not dwarf it or take the focus of the statement pieces of the room (primarily the bed & accessories). Our current range of cabinets and chest of drawers offer a great spread of sizes and styles.

Accessories – Throw rugs, cushions, art, a vase of flowers, clocks.

This is your chance to express your personality with the finer details. The things that make you.. you! We are pretty sure you have this covered…

Some last thoughts to leave you with.

In this “instantaneous society” that we have become, where everything is available at the click of a finger, constantly in a state of “always on”, it is has become very important that we acknowledge the importance of keeping our bedroom a technology-free zone. Consider it the last frontier against chaos and stress.

– Declutter your space

– Make it a mobile-free zone

– TV/Computer-free zone
