Here at The Beach Furniture we are well known for, and pride ourselves on being experts in the coastal, hamptons and nautical inspired interior design styles. We love all elements that represent the sea and this is reflected in the products we stock in our retail and online stores.
So when we come across other creatives who love these interior design styles as much as we do it is a little exciting … We love seeing how our customers use and style our furniture pieces and accessories in their own coastal homes. Last week we made a special visit to one of our regular shoppers, the lovely Lisa McGowan from Oars Galore. Lisa has always been an avid collector of sea shells and coastal treasures including glass fishing floats, oars and was kind enough to take us on a tour of her home, introducing us to her own personal style and letting us snap some photographs!
Come with us as we take a peek into her Currumbin home on the Gold Coast and learn more about this clever local creative.
Lisa’s love for living a styled life has always been present. She proudly painted her home furniture in terracotta, blue and mustard yellow in the 90’s to transform her family home into a coastal hacienda.
In 2006, a chance at building a waterfront home in Currumbin became available and the opportunity was snapped up by Lisa and her family. As a young family, they built their dream home together and the adventures of a boating lifestyle began. This contemporary cool Boat House, affectionately known as Aqua Bungalow by family, friends and of course, Instagram, was the perfect place for the seaside collections. When asked what she loves most about her home Lisa explains, “I love that family and friends always feel comfortable in our home. We are very laidback and love living a relaxed Coastal lifestyle. Boating to the beach and entertaining Alfresco style.”
In 2014 Lisa was in search of a change in career and lifestyle but she just didn’t know what that was yet … she was spending time scouring homewares stores and surfing the internet in the search for a pair of oars to add to her own boathouse home. To her disappointment there were no quality oars available anywhere both online or instore. This is where the Oars Galore journey truly started. After some intense research and many, many decorative painting courses completed, her business was brought to life.
Lisa now skilfully hand paints oars for commercial jobs and interior designers all over Australia. She even supplies to a select few retail stores, The Beach Furniture being one of the few. Our stores in Bundall and Burleigh now stock a small collection available for you to view and purchase either instore or online.
Lisa’s latest re-styling and refurbishment of her own home brings with it a more nautical feel than ever before. Being the coastal interior lover that she is, her home transformation included the purchase of one of our much loved Hamptons Suites in beige to finish off her new living room.
By combining both new and used furniture and accessory pieces, Lisa managed to give her home the revamp it needed without having to spend a fortune. Instead of purchasing brand new furniture pieces to replace EVERYTHING she already had, Lisa painted her big bookshelves, coffee table and desk all in a crisp white. These are items that Lisa has owned for many years and had previously been raw timber. The fresh coat of paint brought them back to life and gave her living space the fresh new look she desired. She also found an old dining setting on Gumtree and painted that too. With the addition of our Hamptons Sofa and a few other accessory pieces she picked up from us, her transformation was complete. (The cushions on the sofa were also purchased from The Beach Furniture and the large plant pots outside in her indoor/outdoor space.)
Lisa applied her own personal twist on a nautical inspired interior by combining new and used furniture pieces. Her space is full of character and screams ‘I am a coastal interior design lover.’ She has successfully created a space that is both charming and inviting. It is quite obvious that she and her family have made so many memories together and have many more to come.
You can check out this lovely creative in action through her instagram account @oarsgalore or see more of her home and personal life at @aquabungalow. We think she loves the Gold Coast just as much as we do.
A few questions for Lisa:
When did you start your Oars Galore business? 2014
What made you make the change, why oars?
Definitely a lifestyle choice and change of career, a passion for design, a lack of quality real oars available.
What do you love most about your home?
I love that family and friends always feel comfortable in our home. We are very laidback and love living a relaxed Coastal lifestyle. Boating to the beach and entertaining Alfresco style. Sharing fresh mud crab and backyard oysters.
Do you have any tips for creating a coastal/nautical interior?
Choosing quality furniture foremost and blending vintage nautical treasures with new luxury cushions and throws. Natural neutral linens with blues and greys and always a pop of green plant leaves.
Tips for creating a Coastal Interior:
When it comes to styling a coastal interior, instead of making bold statements, we opt for washed and neutral toned furniture pieces to create a natural look in the home. Use organic features from the sea and add colours, patterns and textures through artwork, homewares and accessories. Think coral, boats, buoys, stripes, beach wood and seashore finds. Inject blues and greens among greys and other neutrals to achieve balance and symmetry and give the space a coastal, calm feel.
